What is Nipple

In plumbing and piping, a nipple is a fitting, consisting of a short piece of pipe, usually provided with a male pipe thread at each end, for connecting two other fittings.

The length of the nipple is usually specified by the overall length with thread. It may have a hexagonal section in the center for a wrench to grasp (sometimes referred to as a "hex nipple"), or it may simply be made from a short piece of pipe (sometimes referred to as a "barrel nipple" or "pipe nipple"). A "close nipple" has no unthreaded area; when screwed tightly between two female fittings, very little of the nipple remains exposed.

Types of Pipe Nipples

Barrel Pipe Nipple
Pipe nipples are sometimes referred to as barrel nipples which unless otherwise stated, are tapered NPT threaded at each end with an unthreaded section in the middle. Nipples that are threaded on both ends are commonly referred to as T.B.E which stands for threaded both ends.

T.O.E Pipe Nipple
T.O.E stands for threaded one end. This style of nipple is typically used as legs for oil tanks. T.O.E nipples are sometimes confused with weld nipples but true weld nipples have a beveled end finish that is required specifically for butt weld connections.

Weld Pipe Nipple
Welded pipe nipples are made of welded steel pipe which formed from an originally flat piece of carbon steel or stainless steel. And The piece of carbon steel or stainless steel is rolled and welded creating a welded seam going long ways down your piece of steel tubing or piping.

Close Pipe Nipple
A close nipple is entirely threaded, this results in almost none of the nipple being exposed when two fittings are screwed tightly onto both ends. Close nipple fittings are measured by the diameter of the close.

Shoulder Pipe Nipple
Shoulder nipples are larger in length than a close nipple, the threads are intertwined with short unthreaded spaces. and include a very short unthreaded space between the threads.

Hex Pipe Nipple
A hex nipple gets it's name from the hexagon shaped middle section. The hexagon shape allows for a wrench to grasp it securely. If you come across a hex nipple with two different sizes on each end, it is referred to as a reducer or unequal nipple.

Right-Left Hand Pipe Nipple
Right-left hand nipples have a right-hand thread on one end of the nipple and a left-hand thread on the other end. This style of pipe nipple is typically used for gas piping or piping applications where using unions is not allowed.

Swage Pipe Nipple
Swage nipples are used to bring the flow of fluids from one pipe size to another pipe size. You can find swage nipples that are plain, beveled or with threaded ends.

Seamless Pipe Nipple
Seamless pipe nipples do not have a welded seam that runs up the length of the pipe nipples. Seamless pipe nipples are structurally stronger and are designed for high pressure applications.

Grooved Pipe Nipples
Grooved x grooved adapter (Pipe nipple) is a tubular pipe fitting with both ends grooved connection, and it is used to join two pipes with same size.

Advantages of Threaded Nipple Fitting

Cnc Brass Parts for Lamp

The High Strength of Threaded Nipple Fitting

According to the principle of cold work hardening of steel, the strength of the straight thread rolled on the steel bar is greatly improved, so that the tensile strength of the straight thread joint is higher than the tensile strength of the steel base material.

Solid Forged Brass

Fast Connection Speed

Because methods of prefabricating off-site and assembling on-site are used, the prefabricated rebar can be stored in a large amount of prefabricated steel bar. When the construction period is tight, you only need to add assembly workers at the construction site.

Wide Range of Application

There are basically no restrictions on the range of application, and threaded pipe for sale is more suitable for the field where bending steel bars, fixed steel bars, steel bar cages and other steel bars cannot rotate.

Brass Lamp Part Lighting Accessories

Easy to Manage

The threaded nipple fitting like aluminum pipe nipple will not have a mismatch between the sleeve and the steel bar, and the inspection is more convenient. The operation is simple, and ordinary workers can become skilled workers after a few hours of study.

Rolling Thread Vs Cutting Thread Pipe Nipples

Rolling Thread Pipe Nipples

Rolling thread nipples are the high #quality nipples, which are formed by applying pressure to deform the steel material, causing it to displace and create the thread pattern. This process strengthens the connection between the nipple and the pipe, resulting in enhanced durability and leak resistance. Rolling thread nipples provide consistent and uniform threads throughout the entire length of the nipple.

Cut Thread Pipe Nipples

Cut thread nipples are created by cutting or machining the threads into the steel material. This method involves removing material to form the desired thread pattern. While cut thread nipples are commonly used but they have certain drawbacks. The removal of material during cutting can weaken the nipple, potentially leading to reduced strength and increased risk of leaks.

Choosing the Right Pipe Nipple

When choosing a pipe nipple, consider the material, length, and thread size. Here are some tips on how to select the right nipple for your plumbing needs:

Length

Choose a nipple that is appropriate for your plumbing needs. If the two pipes you are connecting are very close together, choose a close nipple. If they are far apart, choose an extra-long nipple.

Material

Choose a nipple made of a material compatible with the fluid you will transport. For example, if you are transporting gas, choose a black iron nipple.

Thread Size

Choose a nipple with the correct thread size for your pipes or fittings. You can determine the thread size by measuring the diameter of the male threads on the nipple.

Attention to the Installation of Pipe Nipple

At the port of the steel pipe, the inner and outer surfaces are slightly deburred.

Brass Hose Pipe Connectors

Ultimate FAQ Guide to Nipple

Q: What material is used for pipe nipples?

A: There are carbon steel pipe nipples, stainless steel pipe nipples, galvanized steel pipe nipples, black steel/iron pipe nipples, welded pipe nipples, seamless pipe nipples. And the length of the nipple is usually specified by the total length of the threaded portion. Also, it may have a hexagonal section in the center for a wrench to grasp (we call hex nipple), or it may simply make from a piece of straight pipe (we call it to barrel nipple or pipe nipple).

Q: What is a nipple on a gas pipe?

A: A short list includes: close nipple, hexagonal nipple, long hex nipple, reducing nipple, hose nipple and welding nipple. I'm sure there are more, but we'll stick with those for now. In its most basic form, a nipple is a short length of pipe with male pipe threads at both ends for connecting other fittings.

Q: What is the difference between connector and nipple?

A: These steel pipe fittings are made of carbon steel or stainless steel. And the main difference between the steel pipe nipple and steel pipe coupling is the thread connection types. The pipe nipple has one male threaded end or both threaded ends, and the pipe coupling has female threaded ends.

Q: What is the difference between pipe and pipe nipple?

A: A pipe nipple is a short piece of pipe with threads on the outside of both ends - two male ends. A pipe coupling is larger in diameter and had threads on the inside - female joint. Also, a coupling can be threaded along its entire length, but it's not kosher to have an all-thread nipple.

Q: What are steel pipe nipples?

A: A Pipe Nipple is a short piece of pipe generally provided with male threads at each end for connecting to other fittings. The stated length of a Pipe Nipple includes the threads. We can custom make any length pipe nipple up to 4" diameter in Schedule 40 or heavier pipe.

Q: How do you tighten a pipe nipple?

A: You can tighten by hand, by using a wrench, or a mixture of the two. By tightening the fitting with your hand, you can ensure that the threads are lined up correctly. If threads crossover, not only does it make it harder to tighten, you also risk stripping the threads.

Q: Why is it called a pipe nipple?

A: They are generally called as pipe nipples because they can easily attach to any threaded pipe surface. They are generally short, and are straight sections of pipe with male pipe threads on both the ends for connecting two dissimilar female threaded pipes or fittings.

Q: What is another name for pipe nipple?

A: Barrel Nipples: Barrel nipples, also known as close nipple or pipe nipples, have male threads at both ends and are typically equal in length. They are used for short extensions and are often employed in low-pressure applications.

Q: Is pipe nipple a coupling?

A: Pipe nipple is a length of straight pipe with male threads on both ends. It is one of the most popular category of pipe fittings. It is a connector or a coupling threaded on both ends. Pipe nipples are used to allow plumbing to be connected to a water heater or other plumbing. They are used to fit straight end hose or pipe. A combination of pipe nipples are recommended for low-pressure discharge and suction service for various compatible liquids and not for compressible products like air, nitrogen or steam.

Q: What type of thread is a pipe nipple?

A: The most common used types are NPT threads and BSP Threads. NPT is an American standard tapered thread, while BSP is a British standard thread. BSP thread has tapered type BSPT and parallel type BSPP. Except threaded end, sometimes steel pipe nipples are also demanded in plain end.

Q: How are pipe nipples made?

A: Solution: Get a 2-3-ft length of scrap pipe the same diameter as the nipples needed. Thread one end and put on a threaded coupling. You are now ready to make your own nipples by threading one end of the pipe and cutting the nipple to size. Inset the threaded end into the coupling of the nipple chuck.

Q: How are pipe nipples measured?

A: Pipe nipples are measured from end to end, including the male threaded end. Pipe nipple sizes are available in a range of pipe sizes, or diameters, as well as lengths. This means that 6" threaded pipe nipples may have a half inch of male threaded cuts on both ends, with an additional 5" of plain pipe in the middle.

Q: What are the types of pipe nipples?

A: There are several kinds of pipe nipples for different purposes. These include the barrel nipple, close nipples, weld nipples, toe pipe nipples, shoulder pipe nipples, hex pipe nipples, right-left hand pipe nipples, swage pipe nipples, seamless pipe nipples, combination/king pipe nipples, and hose pipe nipples.

Q: What is a TOE pipe nipple?

A: A TOE pipe nipple stands for "threaded one end", so it is a pipe nipple that only has one end with a male thread pattern cut into it. Unlike regular threaded pipe nipples, which have both ends threaded, the toe pipe nipple is used for other purposes, such as tank legs.

Q: Are pipe nipples welded?

A: Welded pipe nipples are made of welded steel pipe which formed from an originally flat piece of carbon steel or stainless steel. And The piece of carbon steel or stainless steel is rolled and welded creating a welded seam going long ways down your piece of steel tubing or piping.

Q: What is a NPT pipe nipple?

A: The Nipple Threads are National Pipe Thread (NPT), also known as American National Standard Taper Pipe Thread. This is the common thread used for threaded pipe connections in the United States. NPT is defined by ANSI/ASME standard B1.20.1.

Q: What are basic types of pipe nipples?

A: The basic type of steel pipe nipple is a short piece of pipe with threads at both ends and which is un-threaded in the middle. Its function is to connect pipes or other fittings in the same diameters. We also call the basic type as barrel nipple or pipe nipple. It can be simply made from a piece of pipe.

Q: What is black pipe nipple?

A: Black pipe nipples are threaded iron/steel pipe nipples forged from high-quality carbon steel pipes after coating or sandblasting. Black steel pipe nipples are sandblasted or coated with anti-corrosion coating for increasing the corrosion resistance of the steel pipe nipples and prolong the service life.

Q: What are pipe nipples used mostly for?

A: When it comes to plumbing and piping, a nipple is a fitting that is a short piece of pipe. A nipple is usually provided with a male pipe thread (MPT) connection at each end of the fitting, which are used to make a watertight seal when connecting piping to threaded fittings, valves or equipment.

Q: What is the difference between seamless and welded pipe nipples?

A: From their definition, we can see that one has no gaps and the other has gaps. And the seamless steel pipe can be seen from the outer surface, there is no gap in the whole body; the welded steel pipe has a welding gap. The price of seamless steel pipes is generally higher than that of welded steel pipes. Seamless steel pipes are generally used in factories; welded steel pipes are generally used in construction. The pressure resistance of seamless steel pipes is higher than that of welded steel pipes.
